Abigail Betz
Abigail Betz knew
at the age of two, playing on her mother's manual Singer sewing machine
that she wanted to be a designer. This interest led her to study a National
Diploma in Fashion Design, during which time she won the award for the
Best Couture Collection of the Year. Abigail started her own company
in Cape Town in 1997, she has won various awards and taken part in three
Sanlam South African Fashion Week (SSAFW) events.
Her signature is
one of femininity and romance, her 2008 collection reveals an interplay
of dresses in opulent but lightweight fabrics.
Describing her
inspiration for the recent SSAFW collection, Abigail says,"My work
with the Free State crafters, as part of the SSAFW/Department of Arts
and Culture Fashion Fusion Project, inspired me to experiment with different
design elements - from the natural fabrics, different colours and textures."
Having partnered
with a corporate investor, she recently opened her first flagship store
in Rosebank, which stocks her ready-to-wear couture, bridal dresses
and a line of cosmetics.
